Police Learning Centre, Bridgend

Contract Value: £7.5 Million

Main Contractor: Willmott Dixon

Client: South Wales Police

Creating state of the art learning and development facilities all under one roof for South Wales Police, designed to greatly enhance the level of training that students and new officers receive.

F P Hurley worked closely with Willmott Dixon and South Wales Police (SWP) to deliver the mechanical and electrical services for the new Police Learning Centre in Bridgend. The new building provides state of the art facilities where South Wales Police can train and develop their new recruits and officers all under one roof, which will bring significant collaborative and operational benefits.

The new development was constructed next to the  SWP Headquarters located on Bridgend’s Cowbridge Road site, which has undergone extensive redevelopment in recent years.

The new four storey learning facility has 22 training classrooms which are accompanied by office space for approximately 200 desks for internal departments across the force. The Police Learning Centre houses many specialist units including an Operations Training Unit, Investigative Training Unit and Policing Through Technology Unit. It also has an office for the Police and Crime Commissioner. There is also a separate two storey building that provides a fully equipped gymnasium. In addition to the new build, the project also involved the refurbishment of an existing ‘White Stores’ building that contains a warehouse. The site will see around 340 new parking spaces created along with cycle parking for 115 bikes.

M&E Design

F P Hurley’s design team were engaged from RIBA Stage 1 to develop the M&E design for the project. The building has been designed to achieve an EPC A rating. The design incorporates sustainable features such as energy efficient PV cells with a well-sealed envelope with heat recovery ventilation. The BMS controls will be configured to operate to meet occupant demand. The lecture theatre will also feature mix mode ventilation to allow for natural ventilation when suitable conditions allow.

Unrivalled Experience

Having worked on several facilities for South Wales Police over recent years, F P Hurley have a strong track record in the blue light sector, including the recent extension and refurbishment of South Wales Police Headquarters in Bridgend, the award winning ‘Y Pavilion’ and the Custody Suites at both Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil. We are working closely with South Wales Police to ensure that the Centre will meet all their requirements and needs.
