South Wales Police Custody Suites, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil

Contract Value: £3 million

Main Contractor: Willmott Dixon

Client: South Wales Police

F P Hurley were appointed to provide the mechanical services at two new, fit-for-purpose Police Custody Suites developments in Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil. The new facilities were designed to complement similar modern facilities at nearby Cardiff Bay Police Headquarters, which F P Hurley successfully delivered four years previously. Both the Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil projects ran simultaneously, and were handed over within a six week period. The project was designed in BIM, and our design engineers worked closely with the consultant to develop the design into a fully coordinated, clash-detected and workable model.

Scope of Project

Each custody suite facility comprised of 42 holding cells, in addition to interview rooms and open-plan offices on the ground and first floors of the buildings. Particular features of the installation included five air handling units, three gas boilers, a CHP unit and two chillers. Each cell block has its own AHU which is controlled independently through the BMS system. The main office areas and interview rooms are heated and cooled via ducted air systems and fan coil units.
