A Message from our MD

July and August have been busy months for many reasons not least because we have demanding contracts to complete whilst schools are closed for the summer holidays. These contracts are slotted in amongst our ongoing contracts which continue throughout the summer months. I must thank you all for your hard work and commitment particularly as this has been the hottest summer for many years.

There have been many social events to highlight which started with our sponsorship of the St Joseph’s Hospital Golf Day at Greenmeadows Golf Club, followed by our attendance at a Cardiff City Partners event at Hensol Castle, and the Mighty Hike, all in July, then our Golf Day at Langland Bay Golf Club in August and, finally, our sponsorship and participation in cricket matches with local businesses and cricket clubs throughout the summer. All events were a great success and I thank those of you who participated for doing so with energy and enthusiasm.

From a business perspective, we have continued to be successful in securing a significant number of further orders. A particular highlight for prospective work from the NHS was that we were successful in our bid to join the Carbon and Energy Fund framework which will run for the next 6 years. Membership of this framework will provide opportunities for us to assist with the decarbonization agenda for Health Trusts throughout England. Congratulations go to Ken Gale for managing our bid for membership of this framework. I am pleased to announce that the process has started with the preparation of a scheme for the South Warwickshire University Health Trust.  Good luck to all involved with this bid.

F P Hurley Attend Cardiff City Community Partner Event

F P Hurley has been a Cardiff City Community Partner for several months now and we were delighted to attend the recent Partner Event at Hensol Castle. The Partner Event provided an opportunity for the regional businesses and SMEs, who are all part of the Community Partnership Programme, to meet up and learn more about how the programme can help them grow and promote their brands. The day included a visit to the training ground, a guided tour around Hensol Castle’s gin distillery, and an exciting Q&A session with Cardiff City’s Manager, Steve Morison.

Hurley Golf Day 2022

We’re pleased to report another successful Hurley golf day, this time in the beautiful setting of Langland Bay Golf Club, Swansea, organised as a thank you to customers and industry partners.

The event, which was held on the 4th August, could not have been a better day and the weather was perfect weather for the 16 golfers. Langland Bay offered a unique setting for the day, with the spectacular scenery of the Gower Peninsula providing the perfect backdrop for a memorable day.

We want to say a thank you to all the companies that joined us, including Willmott Dixon, John Perkins, SD Solutions, Pick Everard and Arthur J Gallagher. A trophy was awarded to the overall winner on the day- congratulations Tom Millard of Willmott Dixon. The day was concluded with an evening dinner and the feedback we had from everyone that played was fantastic.

We also want to say a huge thumbs up to everyone at Langland Bay Golf Club for their help in making the day such a fantastic experience.

David Perry and Nigel Clarke Recognised for their “Outstanding Attitude to Health and Safety”

Congratulations to David Perry and Nigel Clarke who were awarded Galliford Try’s Safety Award on the Barry Waterfront School project this month. The award recognises the efforts both David and Nigel are putting in daily and for their continuous hard work and refreshing attitude to safety. On behalf of everyone at F P Hurley, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you both for your outstanding contribution to health and safety on site.

Site Team Clean up Barry Beach

It was great to see F P Hurley operatives Nigel Clarke and Daniel Matthews join in with a litter pick at Barry Beach, organised by the Galliford Try site team at Barry Waterfront School. The team paired up with Year 8 pupils from Ysgol Sant Baruc to clean up Whitmore Bay Beach in Barry. It was definitely time well spent and the team collected eight bags of rubbish from the beach. The event had a bit of everything- the great outdoors, fresh air, great team building and all the while making a difference to the environment.

F P Hurley Support Nantymoel RFC to Transform their Cabin

We were delighted to assist Nantymoel RFC recently with the complete refurbishment of their porta-cabin. The cabin was kindly donated to the mini and junior teams but was in need of total refurbishment so it could be a usable facility. We recognise the importance of embracing our local communities and we were proud to lead the transformation of the cabin into something that will make a real difference to the team. The cabin now provides a pleasant and functional space where the team can hang out and from where volunteers can serve refreshments on match days.

The works included cladding the exterior with aluminium sheets, plasterboard was fitted to the interior walls, removal of an interior wall to open up the space, installation of kitchen worktops complete with a breakfast bar, vinyl flooring, plastic skirting, supply of light fittings, installation of a new door and locks, and painting and decorating to both the interior and exterior.

Thank you to the operatives who contributed to the refurbishment: Andrew Teall, James Teall, Elliott Teall, Sean Grabham, Lee Harben-Jones, Alan Smith and Harley Williams. Also, we wish to say a huge thank you to our supply chain companies that assisted with the refurbishment through the provision of materials. These include HTIC for the aluminium sheets, Jewsons for the kitchen worktops, Nova Flooring for the vinyl flooring, Kendall Developments for the supply of paint, and C&L for door locks.

Supporting ‘Let’s Hit Cancer For 6’

We were proud to support the Vale Cricket Club’s Let’s Hit Cancer For 6 fundraising event on August bank holiday weekend. The 6-a side cricket tournament and family fun day was organised by the Club to raise money for Velindre Cancer Charity and the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

F P Hurley were delighted to sponsor the event and entered a team into the cricket tournament, which saw 6 teams altogether battling it out for the trophy. Well done to all those that played the competition- Conway Jones, Tony Smith, Lee Harben-Jones, Anthony Midgley, Nigel Clarke, Richard Duckfield and Alan Smith.

Guests were welcomed on the day with a BBQ, drinks, live music and plenty of games and stalls to keep the kids entertained. Fundraising was boosted through a raffle along with the sale of LHCF6 red caps.

The well-attended event was a success on all counts, raising £4000 which will be split between the two charities.
