Crown Place, Portsmouth

Contract Value: £3.9 million

Main Contractor: Osborne

Client: Crown Student Living

Following on from previous work with Osborne to provide modern student accommodation for the University of Reading, F P Hurley were appointed to deliver the £3.9 million mechanical contract for this 576-bed student accommodation development. At 23 storeys high, the building is the tallest we have worked on to date, and effectively maximises the use of available space in its city centre location, metres away from the University of Portsmouth.

The facility provides a mix of high-quality bespoke studios and apartments, and 350 sq m of communal facilities where students can socialise, study and relax. The development provides plenty of attractive and comfortable communal spaces, a cinema room and a gym for residents to access.

A City Centre Project

The building was constructed right in the heart of Portsmouth's city centre. The location presented challenges in terms of storage and delivery, which were managed by a carefully planned delivery booking system to ensure the accurate phasing of deliveries at specified intervals and keep the programme from being compromised. To manage the large amount of student and public footfall around the development, the team implemented 'working in live environments' measures to maintain site security and control access.

The development is designed to a high level of sustainability, and we assisted in the achievement of BREEAM credits through the installation of water meters, a CHP unit and thermal balancing valves on the hot water return.

Features of the HVAC installation included:

  • HTHW Heating
  • High-efficiency Condensing Gas Boilers
  • CHP
  • Mechanical Ventilation
  • Smoke Ventilation
  • Air Conditioning
  • Boosted Cold Water
  • Sprinkler System
  • Wet Riser
